Deep within the enchanting rolling fields, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to look after his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes among the solo tree on the peak were his constant associates. Day upon day, guarding his wards instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One morning he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This game continued for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met check here with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
